Well here's a technical vindication, of a sorts, for No Man's Sky = http://3dgamedevblog.com/wordpress/?p=836
It's quite in depth and covers what the data actually in the shipping game can generate and how. Including those fabled dinosaurs that no-one (i.e. very few) seem to be able to find!
The conclusion is that the engine is capable of much more than the game is actually using and that for some reason they seem to have artificially limited the best bits :(

OMG, they now have procedural space stations as well with vast interiors etc in their 27th major update.
