Not sure if you're aware, but I noticed after a few times saving a game and re-loading while in the same system that game performance was dropping. I've discovered that the game acts as though you've entered the system for the first time when you load a saved game, thus spawns new ships, doubling the amount of traffic in the system. So if you stay in one system for a few saves, things get very busy indeed.
For example, here I started a new game and took a screenshot of the traffic once it settled down after 30 seconds:

Then I saved the game and re-loaded it. Letting it settle for 30 seconds, note there's now twice as much traffic:

This continues with each load.
Perhaps this was fixed in a recent update; I'm running the current pre-compiled build from October. I haven't tried figuring out how to compile it from the latest files myself yet.

It's even worse, as ship position in that orbit view is not correct, due to bug that remains to be found.
