Shield meshes

Post by nozmajner »

Just to support custom shield mesh development, based on IRC conversation with robn (cross posting this from IRC at least for documenting it), here are round shield meshes for all ships, UV-ed (some has mirrored UV-s, I'm not sure if that's a problem)

An example:

The transparency effect is just for showint the mesh.

For reference, this is related to #2139 and this Paragon thread. Though if this does make it to Pioneer it probably won't be quite the same. But nozmajner is kinda crazy and goes and does stuff based on a half-formed thought from me. And I consider that a good thing ;)

I should really resurrect that code huh? ;)

EDIT: brought up to date with master. Now needs a lot of rewriting.

Hah, just copied over the shield meshes to the ships folder on my shield branch and was puzzled by the fact that I've got a shield mesh but no ship for the Malabar :D
Took me a moment to remember it was still a work in progress!

A brief update.

I have this mostly working now, but have run across a few problems that I'm rewriting my way around now.

Doing things outside of the scenegraph, on things inside the scenegraph, feels very hacky.

Great!
Just drop me a note if you need any mesh or texture or any other art related stuff for it.

This is obviously only a work-in-progress but this is what it looks like with a fresnel/dot-product type effect on the shield mesh.

Solid white colour, varying degrees of transparency depending on the shield strength and the angle relative to the camera.

And add a texture like this to shields ?

And only my idea, shields look better with a ellipsoidal form

Looks like a soap bubble. I think it's cute. :)
