It could stay a sphere, but it looks ok with the ring too.
Don't forget that the spin gravity acts outward the rotation. Which might screw with this kind of docking area for real (what's supporting the ships?) and in-game too. I'd check that this early, if it works, since the whole thing would rotate around, which would make the docking approach targets go around too, which might screw with the autopilot too.

I like the second solution most.
However, wouldn't it be too difficult to dock in the middle section? Normally, it's easy to syncronize your rotation when you are on the rotaion axis (like in the classic torus-like stations), but in this case you are perpendicular to it. It will be like trying to land on the edge of a rotating LP record. :) (Or did I misanderstood something?)

is possible to open all bottom area for make possible the passage, other solution is make a spiral landing procedure with lights but idk if it work, when i have time i try to make something and import it in pioneer
