Some more on how NMS was done.

If everything is generated, and there are infinite combinations, then how are they going to test it easily? Well, Hello Games once again prove their ingenuity with a sublime solution: ”So, what we have is actually a server, and a set of bots, basically. They fly around planets and take screenshots and animated GIFs, and then we have a little website – internally – and we can just look at these animated GIFs and it will just play it. You can zoom in and out from that: you can see the planet full screen, or zoom right out and see a hundred by hundred grid of planets.”

Talk by Grant Duncan about the Procedural Content Generation for No Man's Sky from an artists perspective on the "big box of maths" :)

Really great talk!

Thanks. I've downloaded (281 MB) it (using youtube-dl), since I don't have flash. Will watch later.

I've been playing it since Saturday morning, it's been good for me but there are some key binding issues - it won't let me drop things with the middle mouse button, and I can't remap it, instead I key an xbox gamepad to hand for flying the ship and for dropping items from the inventory :D

The game is amazing though, it's difficult to describe but it's peaceful to play, interesting exploring the worlds. Some of them are barren and sterile others are full of life and there are just endless things to discover.

I'm loving it, Steam says I've spent 6 hours playing but that's it's dodgy time tracking code, I've sunk closer to 10 hours into it in two days.

So I'd recommend it without reservations.

Yeah that's a really good review of it, most of the early the problems it has sort of fade away, and you get new ones! :)
They go away as you progress too to be replaced with, you guessed it, new problems!

I am loving it though, and I'm still largely in the grind phase of the game looking for resources, blueprints and passes etc.
