Elite!

Post by impaktor »

Funny, we don't have any post on the actual game that started it all...

I wanted to post this really interesting talk by Braben, from 2011 (so pre-Elite Dangerous kickstarter), on the development of Elite, that he's giving for developers, so it's not the usual high level stuff, more nitty gritty. I love all the crazy optimizations and challenges they did to make the game run on the hardware, starting from 19m30s, and redering (33 min in). It's one hour, so plan accordingly (skipp first minute with annoying ads, or 19 minutes to skip the usual "computing in 1982"-introduction):

(@fluffyfreak this is the video I mentioned on IRC the other week)

Anyway, I recommend giving it a watch.

A walk through of original Elite's galaxy generator code, based on Ian Bell's released text Elite (in C):

Because Youtube recommended this to me now, although I've seen it before, I'm posting it here:

I have to post this version of Elite for Emacs:
https://www.salkosuo.net/2015/10/22/eli ... emacs.html
https://github.com/samisalkosuo/elite-for-emacs
Points of interest:
- missions, delivery, thief, assassination, detective missions (find person etc )
- special missions, each special missions result is something unique like navy galactic hyperdrive, system destruction, etc.
- stealth device, expensive, no one sees, allows users to travel without combat"
