Up for grabs: Retro Floppy reading/writing sounds?

Post by impaktor »

This is a crazy goofy idea I have: get floppy reading sound into pioneer, could be seen as a homage of days of yore, like the 80s/90s.

Initially I thought to have it when loading / saving files, but now I'm more leaning towards during pioneer loading screen.

I don't have time to do it, so this is up for grabs. I will share my results/investigations so far. The Amiga emulator has sound samples of disk reading, that sound amazing when put together right.

Amiga sound samples:

The code that makes use of it:

https://github.com/FrodeSolheim/fs-uae/ ... eclick.cpp

And just some sounds from YouTube:

So, tell me if I'm crazy?

Or incorporate old dial up modem sounds. Not sure when to play it though, because it takes long time, and is quite annoying, so only for something where you "connect" or "transfer data", and not something done so often as checking the BBS. Although.... that is the proper setting for it.

Am I turning pioneer into some post-steam punk, 80s home computer homage? Then so be it!

For reference, the sound files are available in the "improved drive sound" archive here:
http://www.winuae.net/download/

From English Amiga Board, there are three versions in that archive:
hal wrote: files named real or a500: a sound library made in 2007
files marked LOUD: the recording I made in 2004
files marked ST: the original monotonic files
