In-game lore content

Post by WKFO »

I don't know how much of this I/we discussed before, but this is a space to collect ideas and talk about them.

The motivation is that more in-game content can give people a better understanding of lore/universe, and extra immersion for the 'lone spacer in huge galaxy' roleplay. (players like me like to read these stuff, so I could go ahead and argue that this counts as fun gameplay).

What can we add?
  • Ships
Content on PioneerWiki can also be displayed on ship market, as "ship description" or something similar. (Maybe internal layout drawings too if we have them in future (this probably won't happen unless we have module damage etc, but sort of like https://pioneerwiki.com/wiki/File:Mola_explan.jpg))
  • Ship manufacturers
Info about ship manufacturers can be displayed on a window that will appear when the ship manufacturer icon is clicked on the ship market.
  • Factions
Info on factions can be displayed when we click on them in system overview etc.
  • Space pilot's handbook (in-game manual basically)
On basic flight (maybe even simple orbital mechanics), using the station windows, fuel scooping, hyperdrives etc. It could help flatten the learning curve a bit.
  • Places of interest
I am not sure about this one because galaxy generation can change(?) from time to time. But, if it is stable enough that we don't need to continuously "maintain" it, we can maybe add BBS modules etc. to lead players to https://pioneerwiki.com/wiki/Places_of_interest

I was thinking about using the github wiki function for this kind of in-game stuff. It uses markdown, which is rather nice, and could be easily updated. And then only stuff that is intended in-game would go in there, so it is easier to maintain.
Not sure how translations would be handled that way though. But I suspect transifex won't be that handy for that anyway.
Maybe branches of the wiki repo would do the trick? Can you even branch a wiki-repo?
Does that makes sense in practice?

Making a wiki translatable is a tricky thing. The problem is change management - the translations will go out of date pretty fast.

A quick web search let me to https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Help:Translating - maybe something like that could be set up.

I'm back here to write down more ideas.

Someday I want to sit down and clean this up: https://pioneerwiki.com/wiki/Story
It is rich in information but quite some things changed. (For example CIW is no longer called a "confederation" but a "commonwealth", and Tolan Kingdom is no more etc.)

Also I just noticed that Haber home system (Zetiar) is not custom, unlike SolFed and CIW. Maybe that should change.

And apart from that, since we've recently started talking about music and stuff again, I actually have made introductory (so they are not ambient, but situational music) musical themes for CIW and Haber in the past, and I just re-rendered and uploaded them. What do you think? I planned to use them as victory themes for combat mission at first. The Haber theme could also double as the theme for the Star's End system etc.

Haber: https://soundcloud.com/user-211556926/h ... oration-v1
Commonwealth: https://soundcloud.com/user-211556926/c ... -worlds-v1
Empire: https://soundcloud.com/user-211556926/imperial-theme-1

And hey, SolFed has a flag! (by Nozmajner)

Commonwealth could have a flag too.

Places of interest - We already have the Advice module, that even has such an entry:
"Don't miss the beautiful eclipse on New Hope as Hades blocks out the light from Epsilon Eridani."

My long term plan is (when more motivated) move this into a bar-setting, so old haggard one-armed pilots share their wisdom over a glass of beer.

Manufacturers & factions
I agree we need some paragraph about each manufacturer and faction. Ideally, we will by then have set up so different manufacturers are represented in different starports/factions, regarding sale/buy/maintenance, (there's a thread here on it I thin here and here), so that can be included into the lore-paragraph. Not sure exactly how we will specialize each port to a particular manufacturer.

I did not know we had changed name of CIW.

@WKFO I don't know if you explicitly said it, but I assume we can have different music for when in different faction space. So "The Imperial March" (or similar) when visiting Haber or something.

...hmmm, I still want a faction modeled on the Roman Empire / or Asimov's Galactic empire, like "Imperial" system in Frontier. Not sure what I'd do with it. I just want an Emperor/Kaiser.

I'll give the tracks a listen to, thanks!

I think the CIW name was always ambigous on the different wiki pages.

It is called Commonwealth of Independent Worlds in the game, so that's what I tend to accept as the "true" form.

I agree, The Commonwealth works better.
I did that SolFed flag quite a few years ago, and had a start on the CIW one as well, but got stalled with it.

Are you planning to complete it (not necessarily soon)? It would be nice to show faction logos on starports instead of the default Pioneer logo.

Yeah, it would be nice. I got stuck on it, coming up with a proper idea, then got distracted. I'll think about it, when schhol stuff normalizes and I have more time.
