I like the idea.

A free roaming camera that does not orbit the ship, but travels with it in the same frame of reference. Or maybe just pauses the game.
Could be accessed by a unused key or a simple key combination, like Ctrl-TAB or sth. I dunno.
Could potentionally make exploring more fun.

This would be nice. Maybe it could pause the game if you activate it, but I think you should be able to use the time controls, so you can wait for certain eclipses or nics lighting conditions after you set up your direction (or want to do a timelapse).
