If we added beam weapons then they would be weaker but faster and continuous for a short period of time, that makes it easier to hit a target than using projectile weapons.

It gameplay terms they would also probably cost more and take up a little more room aboard the ship.

This is moot for the time being since no-one has volunteered to implement them yet, and I am very busy with real-life work at the moment.
