Joystick axes behaviour

I noticed some strange joystick axis behaviour at the weekend.
For each of the 3 main axes, one direction is fine but the other direction is almost "all or nothing".
For example, I can pitch up in a controlled manner by lightly pulling back on the stick, but pitching down is difficult to control - nothing happens when pushing forward slightly, and when about half way forward the nose will suddenly pitch down far too quickly.
Yaw and Roll are the same - left is fine but right is not easily controllable.
Seems to have started doing this recently (otherwise I think I'd have noticed). I recently reinstalled Windows 7 and it was afterwards that I first noticed this issue, so I suppose there could be something different with my system. Joystick (Saitek X52 Pro) works fine with X-Plane though.
Anyone else experience this?
