Best Tutorial

Post by Badger »

Hi All

In the light of some of the heavy duty topics on show in the forum, this thread feels a little flimsy. But on the basis of "you don't ask you don't get"... As a brand new player but veteran of all the original "Elite" games, can anyone direct me to the best beginners tutorial? I've seen the one in the wiki, but it's not very extensive, plus it's steering me wrong from about tutorial 4. (Or I'm getting it wrong.) Ideally I'm hoping for something current and built for dummies so that even I can understand it.

Badger

PS: Playing this game I can't help but remember the magazine article featuring a large dog t*** in the center of the game review for the flawed release of "Frontier". Anyone else remember it? :) Then there was another with a naked lady sitting on a bar stool... or perhaps that was for "Battlecruiser 2000".

Lol, Yeah.... just read that back in my head. Full points to everyone who realizes I'm just talking about nostalgia for adds back in the day and not being rude about the wonderful looking "Pioneer". (D'oh!)

Hi!

The tutorial is, as the wiki states, outdated and WIP (Work In Progress). And by that we mean "No Work In Progress", since we are quite short on people.

Since you're reading the tutorial, and a beginner, it would be awesome if you could add/rewrite any (all?) part(s) you find needs it. Just sign up for an account on the wiki. We would love the help.

For full info on the game, there is the manual:
http://pioneerwiki.com/wiki/Manual
and the space flight article:
http://pioneerwiki.com/wiki/Basic_flight
and keyboard and mouse controls:
http://pioneerwiki.com/wiki/Keyboard_and_mouse_controls

These are quite exhaustive, thus not as short as a tutorial aught to be. So to answer the question of "the best tutorial", there is only one that I know of, and that could become "the ultimate" with a little help.

If you have any specific questions feel free to ask here, or in IRC.

Hi impaktor, thanks for the reply.

Pfffffffffff... that's a tall order fella! :) It's actually something that part of me would love to have a crack at. But the sad truth is that if brains were dynamite, this Badger would barely have enough to blow his nose! The originals were some of my favourite games despite the state of the latter titles on release, but despite that I never really came close to mastering them. From the look of "Pioneer" I've no doubt that it'll quickly be a firm favourite, but the likelihood of my rising to any decent level of competence seems remote, based on my past performance :)

Certainly "if" I feel at some point that I have anything which might be useful to absolute beginners like myself, a Badgers guide to kicking the tires and lighting the fires, I'd be happy to pass it on to you to see if you think it might be of any use. :)

By the way, I've subsequently found ( http://spacesimcentral.com/ssc/forum/23-pioneer/) so apologies for taking up your time posting this in pretty much the wrong place. Interestingly though I notice on that player forum that I am far from the only person looking for a tutorial. Frankly I'm surprised, because with this sort of project, even if the devs are (quite understandably) too busy to divert time into making one, there are always always brilliant fans chomping at the bit to write extensive and invaluable player guides. Not to mention the actual videos they make these days! It's early days though and I'm sure that it won't be long before these things start popping up.

In the meantime I'll take some time to digest the info in the manual and then I'll take to the space lanes. If on that journey I manage to come up with anything worth sharing, I'll give you a shout.

All the best
Badger
