Hi. A couple years back I made a forum post with new star/planet icons for the star system information screen.

I've remade those and they look way better than my old attempt. All of the icons are bundled in the .rar you can download from the link below.
Please note that I'm only providing the artwork, I leave the implementation for someone who can work with code. The icons are upped in quality and size.

I *may* change some icons in the future (especially the life planets) due to style differentiation.

These are nice high quality graphics.
Although I think they might not fare too well as GUI elements, because they are quite detailed, to the point that they feel more like representations of actual planets then generalized UI elements. I mean they don't feel too generalized or iconic for me. Also the level of detail and nice rendering makes them a bit less distinguishable, especially the earth-likes on the second row. They are rich in subtle color information, but that's secondary, and less precise cue for human perception after silhouette.
Although you can see a similar shift in philosophy about icons these days, especially on handheld devices and OSX stuff, adding more detail and rendering, but a lot of times they forget about distinct silhouettes, which sometimes hurts usability.
(Here comes the nitpicker again... :) )
