Show distance to arrive to a complete stop

Post by Tichy »

After trying some in system travels with manual controls, I realized that one of the most useful information that I would like to find, is the distance needed to arrive to a complete stop.
This must be related to the thruster that's facing the direction I'm moving so, when I rotate the ship, the value must change.

I think it would be much more useful and useable than the targeting tunnels... and a lot less cluttering.

If I recall correctly, Space Combat (x-plane derivative) had something like that, and it was very useful. It refuses to start on my machine, so I can't verify it though.

Might be useful to have something similar displayed on the system map too.

Define "complete stop". Do you mean in the current reference frame, or the reference frame of a selected target?

You are right. I mean the target :)

Very good idea, this would be extremely useful.
I think it woud even be enough to make something like:
----
Full break distance from target
-With main thrusters: 50 km
-With break thrusters: 100 km
----
Adjusting the displayed distance when rotating is not that useful because I am seldom flying sidewards.
If it only displays either main (pointing away from target to break) or break thrusters (pointing to target to break) direction of the target, it might
produce a flickering bug when the ship heading is between 90 and 91 degrees.
Showing one more line is most practical imo.
