Yes, this is more an a possible intermediatary stage though. I know that *something* better should go in there, but I don't know what yet.
For example how do I deal with changes in Latitude? Precipitation? etc? Maybe it need to be a 3D texture combining some of that in there as the depth. Or using the other channels. Needs a bit more work but it's not the top issue right now.
Mostly it's just good to understand how it works for when things get more complex ;)

Using other channels for latitude makes sense to me.
