Both in open space or in the canyon of a planet I had hard time approaching ships for rescue because of darkness. Of course we have instruments to go blind, but how about a switch for lighting the 50-100m ahead of the ship?

There are plans for rewriting/upgrading our renderer. Hopefully that will bring support for that as well.

We could add support for a ship mounted light now.
Currently upto 4 lights are chosen but they only really consider stars as light sources. This has always been a bit rubbish. Supporting more lights is possible but comes at a performance cost (of course) without rewriting the rendered to be more modern.
Am simple way to do it right now would be to continue to support the system/star lights, but then allow upto 8 lights total. Then you could have the ship light (if on), plus other nearby lights from other ships / buildings / stations / etc
