Re: Greetings and Feedback and What-not
That's excellent! I think the player should be able to toggle it off and on as needed to avoid too much visual clutter in the center of the screen.

Re: Mission ideas
For another idea about what you might hire a crew for check out the combat autopilot for Pioneer Scout Plus. https://sourceforge.net/projects/pioneersp/files/pioneersp-g29f-w32l32l64.7z/download It feels very cooperative. You fire the thrusters via the keyboard and the autopilot controls pitch and y...

Re: Mathematics of life bearing worlds
Tidal locking might rule out life because the planet has to be close enough to the star for that to happen that it's atmosphere would be blown away by solar winds. Venus is an exception that probes the rule. It's very nearly tidally locked and may have had conditions suitable for life for 2 billion...

Re: Various astronomy news
I recently found this tour of the ISS and think it's kind of cool. I thought my fellow space nerds would like it too.Possibly not astronomy or news, but

Re: Rebalance - third go
Just a quick thought, what about requiring an upgrade to your hyper-drive for intra-system jumps?

Re: Rebalance - third go
Re #2: What I was trying to say is that, once we have the 3D coordinates of the surrounding systems linked to the player's current system, a line drawn from the current system to the destination system would have a point on it where the player exits hyperspace. Where that point is would be determine...

Re: Rebalance - third go
I'm reviving this old post to add my ideas about intra-system jumps. Sorry about the wall of text but this 'essay' has been simmering for a long time. ;) First of all we already have a pseudo-scifi behavior of the hyperdrive. It needs an amount of fuel based on the distance and other factors. It als...

Re: Various astronomy news
Bob, you're terrible! You beat me to it! :D Yes, it can be modelled. It would be a new custom system entry. I don't know the Lua details, but I agree that it should be added. The principle astronomer, Michaël Gillon, said he wanted to name the planets after Belgian beers! I like this place already.
