I was not aware there was a community forum.
I looked up the escape velocity of Earth and it said 11.2 km/s, but maybe escape velocity lowers with distance from the planet.

Stable Orbit
For a few hours I have been trying to get into a stable orbit around Earth, with comic failure. The two methods have have used are thrust upwards until I'm at 100 km, then thrust to the edge of the Earth until my left velocity is 11.2 km/s. The second is to take off at a slight angle to the horizon ...

I'm running the October 2013 version, and I see no option to invert joystick axes.
There is an option to invert mouse axis.
